If you’re looking for a laid-back spot to curb your sushi cravings then Nuri Sushi Factory is it!
The self-serve sushi joint in Cape Town’s CBD offers sushi lovers a treat of note without the pretentious vibes you’d expect from a Cape Town sushi restaurant. But that isn’t all that’s different at this eatery, the food is all kinds of unique too! If you’re tired of seeing the same old sushi rolls on every menu in town then you will love Nuri Sushi Factory - just ask its many, many regulars.
While Nuri might not look like much when you first visit, you’ll quickly grow to love the minimalist and contempoary decor. Place your order at the counter and then grab a seat at one of the cafeteria-style tables or have your meal to go and enjoy it the office, in a nearby park, or at home. This isn’t the kind of place where you will be waited on hand-and-foot but that’s part of the charm of this affordable sushi spot which is often frequented by young professionals, students and those wanting a casual lunch-time retreat.
But don’t let the simple decor and chilled out atmosphere fool you because the food at Nuri is something else! For those who don’t want to venture out of their comfort zones too much, the menu offers the usual sushi rolls such as Calfornia rolls, fashion sandwiches, and hand rolls. But the real magic of this spot lies in its gourmet sushi options and unique sides. I would recommend you go hungry because once you’re there you will want to sample everything on the menu!
I tried a few of the gourmet Rainbow Reloaded Rolls including the Hamachi and Cream Cheese roll (topped with Japanese steakhouse sauce - 4 piece, R30) and the DBL Prawn Roll (steamed prawn Calafornia roll wrapped in prawn and avo - 4 piece, R35). The Biltong Roll (sliced biltong, cream cheese, cucumber, and Jalapeno peppers coated in biltong dust - 8 pieces, R48) is another winner of note and is a must-try for a bit of South African flavour. Don’t forget to leave space for the sides! I loved the Asian Fries (served with wasabi mayo and sweet chilli dip - R25), Crab & Cheese Spring Rolls (3 pieces, R30), and the Prawn Pops (R40).
Nuri Sushi Factory is open Monday to Thursday from 12:00 - 21:00, Friday & Saturday from 12:00 - 22:00, and Sundays from 11:00 - 17:00.
