There’s no doubt about it; there’s no better place to spend lazy, hazy summer Sundays than at Sotano Restaurant at the La Splendida Hotel.

Located just opposite the Mouille Point Lighthouse and the promenade, Sotano is the perfect place to enjoy a lazy lunch with friends - but, just be warned, lunch will turn into after-lunch drinks and nibbles and then into sundowners. The popular seaside restaurant might be known for its tapas menu, but for me their delicious sushi always steals the show. Here’s why Sotano has quickly become one of my favourite sushi spots in Cape Town.

With its chic, modern decor, ocean views, and relaxed vibe Sotano is where the beautiful people of Cape Town go to while away the hours on weekends and after work. Sit outside on the veranda and watch the people of Cape Town stroll by while sipping on a delicious cocktail or a well-deserved glass of wine. If there’s no space outside (it fills up quickly!) then inside is just as nice! Sit near the floor-to-ceiling windows and you will still be able to enjoy the view and people watch to your heart’s content.

As for the sushi menu, there’s something to suit every taste on Sotano’s menu. From classic prawn, salmon or tuna Fashion Sandwiches to salmon or tuna Hand Rolls and Rainbow Rolls there’s enough to keep sushi lovers super happy at this local favourite. If you have an adventurous side then there’s lots for you to explore on the menu at Sotano as well! Try the Jalapeno Beef roll (seared beef with ponzo dressing - R75). Volcano Tuna Roll (spicy tuna, avo, and 7 spice sesame oil topped with spring onion and Nori - R68), or the Asian Soya Salmon (thinly sliced salmon with garlic, sesame seeds and soya - R75). No matter what you choose you can be guaranteed that it will be yummy! The sushi at Sotano might not be the cheapest option but it’s always top notch.

Sotano is also well known for its extensive drinks listing. With a wide selection of wines, craft beers and cocktails on the menu, there’s no excuse not to cheers to a great weekend at Sotano. When I visit the spot with friends we usually share a bottle of wine (or three) between us but more often than not, a welcome cocktail from the oh-so-fantastic Sotano cocktail menu is our first port of call - either way you’re in for a great time so gather your mates and book a table for this weekend. You won’t regret it!
